$4.1M grant to help County efforts on homelessness

Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele recently announced that the County’s Housing Division will receive $4.1 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, an increase of more than $580,000 over last year’s award. While many providers in Wisconsin and around the country saw their funding for homelessness programs held flat, the County was awarded an additional $582,626 a year for rental assistance for chronically homeless families and individuals using the Housing First philosophy. The 33rd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration, coordinated by the MLK Steering Committee, will be held on Sunday, January 15, 2017 at the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts. The program will begin at 1:00 PM in Uihlein Hall and highlight our youth who interpreted Dr. King’s works through art, speech and writing contests. Dynamic development plan selected for MLK Library

Milwaukee Public Library Board of Trustees recently selected Young Development to lead a new mixed-use project to replace the current Martin Luther King Library at 310 W. Locust Street. In his 2014 budget, Mayor Tom Barrett prioritized redevelopment of the library branch system in a multi-year building and renovation program with an investment of $21.5 million over five to seven years. The project calls for rebuilding four branches – Forest Home (which will be replaced by the new Mitchell Street branch in 2017), Mill Road, Capitol and Martin Luther King. SDC’s job training program to begin second year

Low income individuals with an interest in joining the construction industry and earning a livable wage have can apply for the Social Development Commission’s (SDC) Absolute Advantage job training program. The free 12-week program prepares individuals to enter the field of construction as a general laborer. Upon completion of all program requirements, graduates will have certification from the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER), an accredited program that is nationally recognized.
