30th St. Industrial Corridor leader urges area residents to join in redevelopment planning. Cheryl Blue, interim executive director of the 30th St. industrial corridor and BID 37, wants northwest side neighborhood residents to participate in a plan to restore the long-blighted industrial corridor to its former glory. “There are many people in this neighborhood…that need to be engaged in this process as well so that it’s not just people from outside of the neighborhood determining what’s going to happen,” she said in an interview. Flavors of Fall coming to Wehr Nature Center with cheese tasting
The event will kick off with the cheese tasting in the warm glow of the Fireplace Room. A Wisconsin-cheese tasting, harvest-stew sampling, and silent auction will make up the “Flavors of Fall,” Saturday, Nov. 12, from 5-7:30 p.m. at Wehr Nature Center. The fundraising event will support Wehr’s Accessibility Project. The Nature Center is located at 9701 W. College Ave. in Whitnall Park. Milwaukee Public Library gets haunted for Library Loud Days
Library Loud Days continued with free Haunted Central events and interactive workshops. The Milwaukee Public Library (MPL) invited visitors to shriek freely, pardon the screams, and leave their inside voices at the front door once again. In a continuing effort to dispel the notion that libraries are silent establishments that collect books, the latest Library Loud Days event took place over the October 22 weekend. Low-income homeowners can save repair costs under city program
The Department of Neighborhood Service’s Code Loan Program provided a no-interest deferred loan of more than $12,000 for repairs on Maria Alvarado’s home, including a new deck, stairs and a brick retaining wall. In late 2014, Maria Alvarado bought her first home, a foreclosed duplex in the Burnham Park neighborhood that she knew was a fixer-upper. “We had the ceiling, floors and walls repaired, put in new doors and fixed a lot of other things,” said Alvarado in Spanish.
