Victory Garden Initiative awards five community orchards

Recently the Victory Garden Initiative (VGI) ushered in the hope for spring when they announced the winners of five new community orchards that will be planted in April. Every community in Milwaukee County was encouraged to apply for the project that would support their cultivation of local food sources in the city. Founder of America’s Black Holocaust Museum celebrated at annual gathering

Centennial Hall at the Milwaukee Public Library hosted an evening to honor American civil rights activist, Dr. James Cameron, on February 27. The event was produced by America’s Black Holocaust Museum (ABHM) as part of their annual Founder’s Day Gathering. Black Voices Matter! An Evening of Arts and Culture was the theme for the 2016 program. It dramatized the historic and enduring struggle against violence and oppression presented by black artists and writers. The Central Library for the Milwaukee Public Library System hosted a screening of the program, Vel Phillips: Dream Big Dreams on Tuesday, February 16. Produced by Wisconsin Public Television, in collaboration with Milwaukee Public Television, the documentary explored the life of a remarkable Milwaukee woman. Vel Phillips, Milwaukee’s first African American and first female alderman, rose to prominence as one of Wisconsin’s great civil rights activists as well as being the first African American judge in Wisconsin.
