Justice Bradley’s ignorance of history: “Safer at Home” order is not like the internment of Japanese Americans

An Open Letter to Justice Rebecca Bradley of the Wisconsin Supreme Court No, the “Safer at Home” order currently in effect across the state of Wisconsin is not like Japanese internment camps of WW2, and there is no chance that it will be. Being asked to stay at home to protect yourself and other people is not the same as being ripped from your home and taken to a prison camp where you are not allowed to leave for any reason. Being furloughed due to the tough economy brought about by COVID-19 is not the same as losing your...

Wisconsin’s Citizen Soldiers continue lending assistance at Milwaukee County alternate care facility

Multiple Wisconsin National Guard teams are on site at the recently completed alternate care facility at Wisconsin’s State Fair Park to lend a helping hand. A team of Citizen Soldiers supported warehouse operations at the alternate care facility as it was setup, while another team of approximately 60 personnel are preparing to take on roles including patient care assistants, supply specialists, and miscellaneous support tasks at the facility. “We are helping organize the shipments that are coming into the warehouse here, and then we are helping bring all the material into setting up the rooms,” said Sgt. Stacey Williams-Ng: Milwaukee Murals Speak for Themselves

Street art is about community, and freedom of expression. It is one of the brightest spots in the arts sector right now, bringing joy and valuable commissions to artists during this bleak pandemic which has crippled so many other corners of our economy and our nation. Exploiting a crisis: The travesty of Wisconsin’s election is a harbinger for the nation in November

As much as the denial of science is a hallmark of the Trump administration and the Republican Party, Wisconsin Republicans took things to a new level with their cynical decision to hold in-person voting in the midst of a deadly pandemic. State Assembly Speaker Robin Vos epitomized the sickening hypocrisy by showing up at his voting station in Burlington Wisconsin—a town of 10,000 people in southeastern part of the state—with his body draped in full protective gear as if he were ready to perform surgery. As my scientist wife, Dr. Michelle Holmes, an epidemiologist at the Harvard School of...

State lawmaker calls for removal of Speaker Robin Vos as NCSL president after pandemic election disaster

Representative JoCasta Zamarripa (D-Milwaukee) released the following statement on April 9 regarding the removal of Speaker Robin Vos from his position as National Council of State Legislators (NCSL) president: “Assembly Speaker Robin Vos has truly reached a new low. Dressed from head-to-toe in personal protective equipment, which we have a shortage of in this state, he said directly to camera, ‘You are incredibly safe to go out.’ National news outlets routinely mocked him for this, but it was so much more than a blunder. We are in the midst of a global pandemic. The number of Wisconsinites dying from...

Democracy or Death: State GOP forces a smash-and-grab election with in-person voting during a pandemic

Voters in Wisconsin will face a choice on April 7 of participating in a presidential primary election or heeding warnings from public health officials to stay away from large crowds during the coronavirus pandemic. Hours after Democratic Governor Tony Evers issued an order postponing the election for two months, the conservative-controlled Wisconsin Supreme Court on April 6 sided with Republicans who said he did not have the authority to reschedule the race on his own. Conservative justices on the U.S. Supreme Court quickly followed with a ruling blocking Democratic efforts to extend absentee voting. “There are few things we...
