A new season and format for the Milwaukee PBS show “Next Avenue Community Conversations” began production on April 11 under the direction of the creative team responsible for the nationally syndicated Emmy-award winning program “Around the Corner with John McGivern,” which has been a backbone of keeping WMVS-TV as one of the highest-rated PBS affiliates in America. The Menomonee Valley Community Park hosted the Inaugural Hank Aaron State Trail Spring Ride to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the trail and its expansion, with the opening of the west end route, along with a special public art dedication on May 4. Dozens of volunteers installed pieces of colorful tile for a new public art exhibit along the fence at the corner of 27th and Wisconsin, by the closed Wisconsin Avenue Elementary School, with messages of hope for Near West Side residents. The public art installation was moved forward a day to April 26, because weather forecasts for the original date predicted several inches of snow. One of Milwaukee’s most recognizable historic buildings completed $51 million of restoration and opened its doors to the public on April 25 for tours, and in celebration of its transformation into a hub for a vibrant new community. Originally built in 1892, the Milwaukee Fortress has been a key landmark of the Brewers Hill neighborhood. The Lake Express Ferry supported bicycle charities as a celebration of Earth Week and “green” travel options with its annual bike drive on April 26. In appreciation of bringing a gently used bicycle to the Ferry Terminal for donation, Lake Express is giving donors a complimentary certificate by mail. It will be redeemable for one round-trip classic cabin ticket, with a $161 value.
